This foundation is built on over a decade of sustained work and research into diseases and their patterns among senior citizens in Jammu and Kashmir. Over these years, we have developed a deep understanding of the unique and evolving health challenges faced by the elderly in the region, with a consistent focus on enabling them to age with dignity, care, and respect.
During this journey, more than 30,000 senior citizens have been treated and studied across government hospitals and private clinical settings. This work has addressed a wide spectrum of concerns, including chronic diseases, mental health conditions, and the often-overlooked realities of elder abuse and neglect.
It was through these close and continuous interactions that a deeper truth emerged—beyond medical illness, many seniors were silently suffering from abandonment, emotional neglect, and loss of social belonging. Witnessing the extent of this vulnerability became a defining turning point. It led Dr. Zubair Saleem, who had been leading geriatric services at JLNM Hospital and contributing as a nodal figure in geriatric medicine in Kashmir, to gradually transition his focus from institutional roles towards building a more compassionate, community-driven response to the needs of ageing parents.
This extensive experience highlighted critical areas requiring urgent attention—access to healthcare, financial dependency, emotional well-being, and social isolation. The Foundation was thus envisioned not merely as a healthcare initiative, but as a support system addressing the broader ecosystem of ageing.
Our approach is comprehensive. It includes regular health check-ups, management of chronic conditions, and access to essential medications, alongside dedicated attention to mental and emotional health. Recognizing that loneliness and isolation significantly impact well-being, we actively promote social engagement and intergenerational bonding, ensuring that seniors remain connected, valued, and heard.
Equally important is our commitment to addressing elder abuse and neglect. Through targeted interventions, legal guidance, counselling, and awareness campaigns, we work to protect the rights and dignity of seniors, while sensitizing families and communities to their responsibilities.
